Hi Radar Substackers, Daniel Gura here.
Another execution is looming. And after what happened to Christa Pike, death penalty opponents are sounding the alarm.
Jeffrey Weisheit, 50, is scheduled to die by lethal injection in Indiana on Thursday, November 5, for murdering his girlfriend’s two young children.
But there’s a problem.
Indiana uses the same drug that reportedly failed to kill Pike during her botched execution in Tennessee just weeks ago. And now, the pharmacy supplying the drugs is reportedly under investigation for serious safety violations.
Not exactly reassuring.
In September, Pike survived two doses of pentobarbital and ended up hospitalized. She later described waking up days afterward in excruciating pain.
“My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts,” she said. “I still struggle to speak. And the pain isn’t just physical. There is pain in my mind and in my soul.”
The ordeal was so controversial that Tennessee’s governor paused executions through the end of the year.
Now opponents fear Indiana could be heading for a repeat.
