Katy Perry Probe — Police Investigate Historic Claim As Past Allegations Resurface
The singer denies the accusation — but insiders say the fresh claim has reignited scrutiny around earlier controversies.
Katy Perry is facing renewed scrutiny after Australian police confirmed they are investigating a historic sexual assault allegation – with insiders saying the claim has reopened a series of past accusations that had previously faded from public attention.
The allegation was made by actress and model Ruby Rose and concerns an incident said to have occurred at a Melbourne nightclub around 2010, during a period when Perry was rising to global fame.
What began as a social media disclosure has escalated into an active police investigation, placing one of pop’s most recognizable figures under formal scrutiny.
Victoria Police have confirmed that detectives from the Melbourne Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse Investigation Team are examining the allegation, issuing a brief statement that a historical sexual assault at a CBD venue in 2010 is under investigation.
Rose, known for roles in Orange Is the New Black and Batwoman, posted a detailed account of the alleged incident online before stating she had finalized her reports with police and would not comment further.
Perry’s representatives responded quickly, describing the claims as “categorically false” and “dangerous, reckless lies,” while pointing to what they described as a pattern of public accusations made by Rose against other individuals.
Those close to the situation say the development has created an immediate shift in how Perry is being discussed publicly, particularly given the scale of her current tour and recent high-profile appearances.
A social media expert said:
“What happens in a case like this is that the narrative moves incredibly fast once it crosses from a personal allegation into a police investigation, because the public perception shifts from ‘this is a claim’ to ‘this is something being formally examined.
“Even if nothing is proven, the volume of conversation increases dramatically, and older clips, past moments, and previous accusations are pulled back into circulation, often without context, which creates a cumulative effect that can be very difficult for any public figure to control in real time.”
The allegation has also triggered renewed attention around several earlier claims involving Perry, which at the time did not result in formal complaints or legal action.
In 2019, actor Josh Kloss – who appeared in Perry’s Teenage Dream music video – accused her of verbal bullying on set and alleged that she exposed him to others at a party without consent.
That same year, television presenter Tina Kandelaki claimed Perry touched her inappropriately and attempted to kiss her at an industry event.
The conversation has also returned to a widely discussed moment from 2018, when Perry, then a judge on American Idol, kissed a 19-year-old contestant on the lips without warning after he said he had never been kissed.
Although the contestant later said he did not view the incident as harassment, he acknowledged feeling uncomfortable, and the moment drew criticism at the time.
Despite those earlier controversies, Perry has not faced formal legal consequences in relation to any of the previous claims, and no lawsuits or charges resulted from them.
However, the emergence of a police investigation has shifted the context in which those incidents are now being viewed, particularly as public attitudes around consent and workplace conduct have evolved significantly over the past decade, with those accused including her former husband Russell Brand.
Perry, who is currently on a global tour and recently headlined Coachella, has not addressed the allegation directly but has shared a message on social media that references truth and personal resilience.
Her representatives have declined further comment beyond their initial denial, and no charges have been filed to date.
The investigation remains ongoing, and the outcome is uncertain.
But the shift is already clear – a single allegation has expanded into a wider reassessment of past behavior, placing Perry under a level of scrutiny that had not previously materialized in this form.
