Donald Trump is demanding at least $15 billion from the New York Times and Penguin Random House in an extraordinary defamation battle – but the eye-popping payday is only the beginning of what he’s alleging.
According to court documents obtained by THE VAULT, the president filed a 62-page Second Amended Complaint in Florida federal court on August 27 against the Times, reporters Susanne Craig, Russ Buettner, and Peter Baker, as well as Penguin Random House.
The lawsuit targets two Times articles and Craig and Buettner’s book, Lucky Loser: How Donald Trump Squandered His Father’s Fortune and Created the Illusion of Success, which Trump claims contained numerous false and defamatory statements about his fortune, business record and reputation.
But buried inside the sprawling filing are explosive accusations about how the stories were reported in the first place – including claims one star reporter failed to interview a single source while preparing an article Trump is now challenging.
