Ruby Rose's Shock Katy Perry Allegation — How Historic Claim Could Complicate Ongoing Police Probe
The accusation has ignited global scrutiny — with insiders warning the public fallout may shape how the investigation unfolds.
In the age of social media reckonings, few stories ignite as much immediate scrutiny as a historic sexual assault claim between two high-profile women who once appeared to share a friendship.
This week, Australian actress and model Ruby Rose, 40, publicly accused pop superstar Katy Perry of sexually assaulting her at Melbourne’s now-defunct Spice Market nightclub in 2010.
The graphic allegation, shared on Threads, thrust both women back into the spotlight and prompted Victoria Police to confirm an active investigation into a “historical sexual assault.”
Rose, who gained to international fame through Orange Is the New Black and later fronted Batwoman, described the alleged incident in stark and graphic terms, claiming Perry “saw me ‘resting’ on my best friend’s lap to avoid her and bent down, pulled her underwear to the side and rubbed her disgusting vagina on my face until my eyes snapped open and I projectile vomited on her.”
She added that she was in her early 20s at the time and had been attempting sobriety, later reframing the night publicly as a “funny little drunk story” because she “didn’t know how else to handle it.”
Rose also alleged that Perry helped her secure a US visa in the aftermath, which she claims contributed to her decision to remain silent for years.
A 2011 column Rose wrote for the Herald Sun has since resurfaced, offering contemporaneous context that has become central to how the allegation is being assessed.
In it, she described the same night in far lighter terms, recalling that she had been “off the grog for 30 days” before going out with Perry, drinking heavily, and “vomiting on Katy’s foot,” while adding, “Before you jump to conclusions, nothing horrific happened.”
A source familiar with how such cases are evaluated said:
“That earlier account doesn’t automatically disprove anything, but it immediately becomes a focal point for investigators because it captures how the incident was framed much closer to the time.
“What police will be looking at very carefully is how and why a narrative may have changed, whether that shift is consistent with delayed trauma responses, and whether there is any corroborating evidence that supports one version over another.”
Those tensions have only intensified as more accounts from the night have emerged, including from the former manager of Spice Market, who described the evening as a “security nightmare” with hundreds of patrons present.
He recalled Perry and Rose arriving together, appearing intoxicated but not incapacitated, and spending time in a VIP section, while stating he did not know about any assault.
The conflicting recollections have quickly turned the case into a flashpoint online, with supporters and skeptics drawing sharply different conclusions from the same set of facts.
Perry’s representatives responded swiftly, issuing a firm denial that sought to challenge both the allegation itself and the broader credibility of the claim.
“The allegations being circulated on social media by Ruby Rose about Katy Perry are not only categorically false, but they are also dangerous, reckless lies,” the statement read.
It added: “Ms. Rose has a well-documented history of making serious public allegations on social media against various individuals, claims that have repeatedly been denied by those named.”
Perry herself posted a cryptic message to Instagram, writing: “Let the universe call the bluff / Yeah, the truth will set you free.”
The case has also drawn renewed attention to Rose’s broader public history, which has included both high-profile success and a series of public disputes that have shaped perceptions of her credibility.
After leaving Batwoman in 2021, Rose alleged toxic working conditions and misconduct on set, claims Warner Bros. denied, while co-star Dougray Scott described her allegations against him as “defamatory” and “entirely made up.”
Her past relationship with Jessica Origliasso of The Veronicas also ended publicly, with Origliasso accusing Rose of “continued harassment” after requesting no further contact.
Victoria Police confirmed that detectives from the Sexual Offenses and Child Abuse Investigation Team are examining the allegation, but have declined to provide further details while inquiries are ongoing.
For now, no charges have been filed, and the presumption of innocence remains central as the investigation continues.
