Andrew Mountbatten-Windsor was arrested by Thames Valley Police earlier today on suspicion of misconduct in public office. Searches were conducted at properties in the British counties of Norfolk and Berkshire.

The King issued a statement expressing “deepest concern” and stressing that “the law must take its course.” The palace confirmed it would cooperate fully.

It’s a serious charge. It carries severe potential consequences, including a maximum penalty of life in prison. It is also, institutionally, a test, with many saying that Andrew’s arrest is unprecedented in royal history. But to anyone who has followed royal scandals in the past, the language was instantly familiar.

Concern. Process. Cooperation. No further comment.

We have heard this before. The question is not whether Andrew is guilty or innocent. The question is how the monarchy handles an existential threat. And the answer isn’t improvisation. It’s precedent.

Rewind

We’re going to take you on a speed run of scandal and head back through the monarchy’s most destabilizing crises of the past thirty years. One by one, we’re going to put aside nostalgia and focus on asking four questions each time:

  1. What actually happened?

  2. How did the palace respond?

  3. What did they learn?

  4. What does that teach us about Andrew now?

Let’s rewind.
